Since Hal shares his soul with Dirk, he would be affected should Dirk give in to any darkness in his heart. Since going Grimdark is essentially becoming a Nightmare, Hal would revert fully into a Nightmare-like state. Which is an extreme dose of unreality that would scare the shit out of him.
