“millenials killing cable”

mountainlane:

okay, so here’s the thing. i’ve got a student prime account and netflix. comes to about $15.91 a month. if i added the commercial-free version of hulu, it would come to $27.90 a month.

basic cable before internet is $64.99 a month. which includes commercials. and infomercials. about a quarter of all television is commercials. which is about $16.25 a month to have someone selling shit to you.

explain how it’s my and my generation’s fault that we’re not falling for the same scam our parents are.

Ooookay.  I try and avoid things like this because I’m mainly here for art and fics, not social issues.  I am well aware of the rampant ‘isms’ on this site and try to steer clear.  But this… allow me to share my situation about this.

I wanted to get rid of my sat/cable.  I really did.  I knew Spectrum had an Internet plan with a speed that would be fast enough to use all the streaming services I was interested in.  I called them up and tried to get it, asking all the important questions I could.

Well guess what?  My apartment is wired ONLY FOR AT&T.  Yup, for some reason as long as I live here (and no, moving is not an option at this point), I can only get either AT&T services or one that piggybacks on their network.  But it gets better!  The faster speed packages from AT&T?  Even if I wanted to pay through the fucking nose for more speed, I can’t get those either.  Don’t know why other than they don’t give a shit about speed in low income areas and we’re lucky we can connect at all.  So currently I’m on a 3Mb plan from a piggyback company for $60 a month because that’s the best I can get.  If I give up my sat/cable, I would have to try and stream on 3 lousy Mb.  (Mind you, that 3 is if it’s a clear day and no one else’s signal interferes.)  Oh, and wireless plans?  Cost even more than sat for this area.

TL;DR: Don’t assume people are in these situations because of age.  And don’t assume they want to be there, either.
